Caring for Granite Counters

Granite is an investment that will give you many years of beautiful service. Stone is a natural product and simple care and maintenance will keep it looking beautiful.

Granite is a relatively hard, natural stone. Because granite is a porous material, each slab must be sealed to make it moisture and stain resistant. Once sealed, all that is needed for everyday care is water, a sponge and a dry cloth.

Routine Care:

  • Clean stone surfaces with a few drops of neutral cleaner, stone soap or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Use a clean rag for best results.

  • Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids (such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners or tub & tile cleaners) on the granite as the high acid content may etch the surface.

  • Abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and scouring powders or creams (such as dry or soft cleansers) should never be used because they can damage the protective finish.

  • If any question arises what to use, TEST CLEANING PRODUCTS ON AN INCONSPICUOUS AREA BEFORE CLEANING VISIBLE AREAS!

  • Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks.

  • Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth.

  • Change the rinse water frequently.

  • If staining occurs, a poultice-based powder mix is required. A poultice will actually draw out deep seated dirt and stains from the stone's pores.

  • Don't mix bleach and ammonia; this combination creates a toxic and lethal gas

Heat Damage:

Unlike laminates and solid-surface materials, a hot frying pan has no effect on granite's mirror like finish. The diamond-like hardness of granite makes it virtually impervious to abrasions, stains, and extreme heat.

Prestigious, durable and easy to care for, natural stone is the best.
